Immigration and Chicken July 13, 2007

El Pollo Rico is the best Peruvian rotisserie chicken in Wheaton…or it was. As the Zagat ratings reveal, the food was excellent and cheap. There were lines of people coming out the door constantly, but now the restaurant has been raided. Immigration is a big issue right now and will be a heated topic come the next elections.

Korean-Americans’ backlash fears lessen April 25, 2007

After a film festival meeting last week, a CNN reporter came by to interview some of the Korean-Americans in our organization about their views on the Virginia Tech shooting. The journalist who was present didn’t seem to be trying to find an angle but was just letting the people who wanted to speak, speak. I haven’t seen the finished segment since it was supposed to air internationally, though I’ve heard it being broadcast in certain local markets. Here’s a blog entry on what was said that night.

Yul Kwon, the first Asian American to have won Survivor, has come to the forefront as spokesman for several Asian American causes, including Asian Americans in entertainment. He served as emcee for the opening night film at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival and was spotted having his picture taken pretty much everywhere. Check out the latest web clip that Eric Byler has made with Yul Kwon as he continues to tackle political issues for Asian Americans.

Saw several good films that will probably be at the DC APA Film Festival in the fall and sat in on a couple interesting panels that left me a little depressed at how far Asian Americans still have to go to make their voices heard in the media arts. Read a little more about our trip on the APA Film blog. I’m bad at posting pictures online and I only took a few pictures in SF because everyone else was taking them but take a look at what I got in my Flikr.

Bad with blogging November 17, 2006

I’ve been bad at putting up blogs in a timely manner lately. So here’s a few things that I wanted to write about the past few weeks.

Jim Webb won the Senate seat in Virginia, overcoming a substantial deficit early in the campaign, resulting in the Democrats being in the majority. I like to think that the campaigning that Eric Byler, the DC APA Film Festival opening night director, did during his stay here helped to turn the tide. Watch a short film he made for the campaign while he was in Hawaii.

Saw Borat. I’ve seen clips of Sasha Baron Cohen stuff before so I knew what to expect but he definitely pushed the limits of his character. And that one scene. If you’ve seen it, you know what I mean. It was so funny yet so disturbing. Definitely not everyone’s cup of tea but if you like Da Ali G Show, you like it. Amusing and a bit subversive.

Going to New York this weekend to attend an interesting discussion on Chinese-Americans in America. At least I hope it’s interesting. The lineup of panelists is a broad spectrum of Chinese-Americans in media.

Wow…earlier this week Bush took responsibility for federal response to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Went to weather.com and put in the zip code for Hell. Yep, zero degrees Celsius.

About damn time. Kayne West used public air time to express his views and spoke out about Bush. I wish I had seen it firsthand. I don’t totally agreed with what he said or the way he presented it, but more people should speak up and be heard about their views towards what’s going on with this country and with this presidency. People are being censored left and right. Tension is building. Something is going to have to give soon and real leaders will have to step up. We need a real leader.
