If you have an American Express card, check out their wishlist deals. You’ll have to be quick on the trigger if you want in, but there are some real nice things available. Some of the trips seem really worth it and I may upgrade my camcorder.

Looking for flights have been made a little easier with a bunch of sites scouring all the airlines for the best possible prices. Though the price of flying has seemed to have been going up. Here’s a couple of sites I’ve been using lately:

Kayak

Farechase

Edit: Also try Farecast which tries to predict whether or not the prices will increase or decrease in the next few days based on some kind of algorithm they designed.

Asian Americans are making strides in television. Albeit tiny strides, progress is being made nonetheless. On network television, shows like Lost, Grey’s Anatomy, and Heroes have Asian Americans as part of their regular cast. On cable, there are several startup networks looking to grab hold of the Asian American dollar, including Imaginasian, MTV World, and AZN Television. Will one of these channels draw more Asian American eyeballs and do what BET did back in the 80s? Time will tell…

PS3…in hand December 23, 2006

It’s about 48 hours before Christmas and I have a PS3 in my hands. When the PS2 came out, I waited a few hours in the cold to get one on the first day. I could have eBay’ed it and made a profit but I kept it. After Christmas, the PS2s were relatively plentiful and I missed out on a few hundred dollars. This time, the PS3s were more scarce and people have more disposible income so people were doubling or tripling their investment after the release date. But there are more choices this year with the XBox and the Wii so the supply of people who are willing to pay the premium for the PS3 has run out already. You can buy a PS3 on eBay for very close to retail price right now. I was Christmas shopping at Best Buy today after work and saw 15 60G PS3s just sitting there. And I bought one. I didn’t buy it for myself. I bought it for my brother-in-law’s brother-in-law because he wanted one and could use it. I’m tempted to keep it but I barely have the time to do the things I want to do without the added distraction. Also, if I kept it, I’d have to buy a nice TV to use it with. I’ll probably get one of my own eventually but right now I’ll just go over to my sister’s place, if I have the need to play.

The Sickness December 5, 2006

I haven’t been feeling great for the past month and a half. I was sick for a two weeks straight last month. Then I got better, but then I got sick again. Then I got better, then I got sick again. This weekend I decided to see a doctor after a friend went to the hospital for an operation to remove a tumor. The tumor was benign but he only got the x-ray because he had bronchitis several times this year. Guess what the doctor told me…I have bronchitis.

Was able to read a book and watch a few films. Read Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami, an author I’ve been meaning to get to for a while now. The book was not what I expected which isn’t saying it was bad but I’ve just finished reading it and still need to digest it. I watched Hard Candy and it was one of the most excrutiating movie viewing experiences ever. I had heard a synopsis of the movie before but was really unprepared for what I witnessed. Difficult to watch but a really smart film that makes you think. Also saw The Inside Man, Spike Lee’s new film. The film was a fairly neat heist film with some strong performances.

If you’re into hipster cool t-shirts, checkout threadless.com. They let the unwashed masses come up with the designs. They choose the hippest ones and make t-shirts with them. Then, they sell a limited amount of those shirts online. If you always had that a cool “Oooh, wouldn’t it be neat if they had a t-shirt that had” idea and don’t have a manufacturing company, you can put your idea online to be scruntinized by thousands of people who will give you the thumbs up or thumbs down. They have contests that seem really worthwhile to young, up-and-coming graphic designers. As a matter of fact, I may try and take a stab at a design or two myself.

I’m flying out to San Diego in a couple weeks for the San Diego Asian Film Festival. I haven’t flown much but I’m taking Frontier Airlines there and Jetblue back. I’ll compare them when I get back. I have no love for AirTran. They lost my luggage on a trip to Florida. They eventually found it but it was annoying. Air travel has slimmed down. With so many people flying and the security measures, the whole air travel “hospitality” concept has gone away. I don’t remember ever having a meal on a plane. Deprived of the taste of the “airline food”, I wonder if it was really as bad as it was rumored to be. hmmm…it might be an interesting idea to have a concept restaurant based on “airline food”. Come for the experience, not for the food.

Baltimore Comic Con September 11, 2006

Went to the Baltimore Comic Convention on Saturday. Used to be more of an indie convention but I think they’re trying to get more mainstream. It’s still pretty small. You don’t get the interesting people watching that you have from anime conventions and you don’t get the interesting panels/guests that you’d get from one of the bigger conventions. They had a good number of dealers though. Missed out on a few good deals by mere minutes. Just got a Drew Struzen artbook and an older graphic novel I’ve had my eye on for a while on the cheap.

It was bound to happen. I don’t know what the statistics are but I think in a lifetime, you’re bound to be a victim of a crime. Someone broke into my place. Weird thing is that it looks like the only stuff they took from me was a bunch of change. I mean I had a lot of loose change around for no good reason. Was pissed off but at least they didn’t take my laptop which was just sitting on my bed.
