NY Comiccon – Year 2 March 23, 2007

Saturday tix sold out early so I could only get tix for Sunday which isn’t bad since there would be less crowds and many of the panels I wanted to check out were that day. Ran into folks from Imaginasian TV and Giant Robot who were two of the media sponsors for the DC APA Film Festival last year. There was more room and things were much better coordinated than last year. There weren’t as many long lines that I had to stand in. Last year, I met Jim Lee, Milla Jovovich, and I swore I walked past Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance. This year, I got a sketch from Whilce Portacio, got a piece of artwork from Mori Chack, the designer of Gloomy Bear, and got advice from writers producing scripts for the comic, TV, and film worlds.

I also grabbed some Beard Papa’s creme puffs on the way home. Not a bad day but the drive home was fairly horrid as the fluffy white snow came tumbling down across the upper Jersey Turnpike. Snow became wet snow and slush as trucks began pouring sand the size of pebbles on the road and off my car as I passed by.

It’s Restaurant Week again in the nation’s capital. Unfortunately, right now, I don’t have a car nor anyone who’d like to go out and eat. But for those of you who do, it’s a great opportunity to sample some of DC’s finest.

I don’t know how long they’ve been doing this but every year, the Washington Post puts out a list of Best Bets for food and fun. Every year, I want to hit every place and fail miserably. Seems like people don’t like going out anymore. They open up voting to the public so get your votes in. Voting ends soon.

Burgers and the Bat June 28, 2005

This past weekend, I went to Five Guys for the first time to have a burger. Their website is pretty crappy but their burgers are pretty tasty. There’s a reason why they seem to be popping up in several locations in the area. Burgers that don’t taste like the big corporations at a fair price.

Afterwards, I saw Batman Begins. It couldn’t have been worse than the last couple Batman films but that’s not saying much. I found it quite enjoyable. Nolan brought a more gritty, real perspective on the story of Batman. The acting was superb but considering the level of actors, that’s not too surprising. The only complaints I have is that Nolan could have used a better fight choreographer and showed more of the Batman’s fighting prowess. They also edited it for a pretty quick pace and there were times when they could have slowed it down a bit. I think a better editor could have fixed the pacing issues.

A co-worker came back from Mexico and brought back this tamarind candy. Don’t think I’ve ever had candy that was sweet, salty, and spicy at the same time until now.

Food For Thought April 9, 2005

Another week…another happy hour for a leaving co-worker. This time at Coastal Flats. A break from going to Rio Grande but I think we’ll be back to Rio Grande for the next one. Afterwards, we went to see Fever Pitch. It was suprisingly good. A bit less over the top humor from the Farrelly Brothers but that’s probably because it’s an adapted work. Jimmy Fallon was pitch perfect in his role and Drew Barrymore her usual self. After high school, I really wasn’t into baseball anymore with the strikes, the whiney players, and now the steroid scandal. It’s good to see something representing the positive side of baseball.

Went on a cruise with a couple of my sisters, my sister’s fiance, and my sister’s friend. The trip started out bad when the airline lost my luggage, but luckily was found a couple days later. The weather was great and the beaches were wonderful in Florida. The cruise itself was just okay but I’m glad I took the days off. Only one day in the Bahamas. If I were to do a cruise again I’d probably do one of the bigger cruise ships but that might not be for a while. Pictures will be up in a little while.

On the way back, I read an article on the founder of eBay. His life is what I always kind of aspired to have. Build something that an extraordinary amount of people use or can get into. Then, make enough money to be able to open foundations and give back to the more unfortunate people in the world. Find out what he’s up to now here: http://www.omidyar.net/home/

btw, excellent recipe for ziti here: Baked Ziti

Amazon commissioned some short films to be made from Ridley/Tony Scott’s production company. Like the BMW shorts, they are essentially longer narrative commercials that feature products that are sold from Amazon. I like the style of the Agent Orange short, kinda like Wong Kar-Wai’s style, but the story is cheesy. Most of the shorts are kinda cheesy so far. Wonder when/if they’re going to make another series of BMW shorts. At least they were watchable.

Went to a new sushi/seafood buffet in Fairfax for my sister’s fiance’s birthday. Pricey place. Wouldn’t go every month. Good variety of food and good if you like seafood. Ate to my fill and tummy ached but it was wasn’t bad. And is it me, or does their mascot look a little funny.

Sister #3’s birthday was yesterday. Went to Tako Grill in Bethesda. There are definitely better places for sushi in the area. Don’t think we’re going back again. We actually came home and made more food because we weren’t full yet. Got a cake from Cold Stone Creamery. Cakes are kinda pricey but if you get the custom ones, you’ll probably get something you like.

Photo of my sister on her birthday at Guapo’s. Sorry it took so long to put up. And she doesn’t usually wear a sombero when she goes out.

Hung out with some co-worker’s for another co-worker’s birthday a couple weeks ago. I don’t really like Olive Garden or Rio Grande but it wasn’t my birthday. And I don’t usually wear a tiara when I go out either.

Thought about getting this cell phone: Audiovox SMT5600 Smartphone
It has camera AND plays mp3s AND plays videos AND functions as a PDA. BUT it’s a AT&T phone and some people say the service isn’t too good.
