NY Comiccon – Year 2 March 23, 2007

Saturday tix sold out early so I could only get tix for Sunday which isn’t bad since there would be less crowds and many of the panels I wanted to check out were that day. Ran into folks from Imaginasian TV and Giant Robot who were two of the media sponsors for the DC APA Film Festival last year. There was more room and things were much better coordinated than last year. There weren’t as many long lines that I had to stand in. Last year, I met Jim Lee, Milla Jovovich, and I swore I walked past Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance. This year, I got a sketch from Whilce Portacio, got a piece of artwork from Mori Chack, the designer of Gloomy Bear, and got advice from writers producing scripts for the comic, TV, and film worlds.

I also grabbed some Beard Papa’s creme puffs on the way home. Not a bad day but the drive home was fairly horrid as the fluffy white snow came tumbling down across the upper Jersey Turnpike. Snow became wet snow and slush as trucks began pouring sand the size of pebbles on the road and off my car as I passed by.

The San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival is coming up next month. That’s the main reason I’ve been looking for flights. Their schedule is up now too. Check it out. We’ll hopefully be bringing some of these films here for the DC APA Film Festival in the fall.

Also, the NY Comiccon is coming up. Though Saturday only passes are sold out, I’m looking at some of the Sunday programs, especially hearing Brian K. Vaughn, one of the amazing writers that will be making the transition to writing for television and the show, Lost. btw, last night’s episode was really good with some excellent acting.

There’s supposedly 74 different bands in this picture. Can you catch them all?

Where’s the Band?

Why do I hear about these things until after they happen? Sounds like a cool event and I probably would have gone to the one in New York. Unfortunately, it probably won’t come to Washington, DC. DC doesn’t have cool things like this. :(

Haven’t been working on my art much. Haven’t had much inspiration. Also been busy working on the film festival and working on writing a script. But if nothing is around to inspire you, you have to go out and find something. Been looking a various art books and comics. Just read the Identity Crisis trade paperback. I thought the ending was a little weak but as a whole, it was a suprisingly interesting read and the tone was really geared more to the older reader. It read like a novel but since it was written by a fairly famous novelist, that was not too suprising. It was pretty dark for a comic and was a pretty revealing look at mainstream comics today.

My current job is a better commute so I’ve a little more time working on the things I want to do. Trying to do more sketching lately. Bought an art book by Hyung-Tae Kim in Japantown when I went to San Fran a couple months ago. I had my eye on it for a while but hadn’t found a good price on it. He draws in a Japanese manga style. What’s makes him unique is his great design sense and the way he digitally colors his work. Here’s a link to see some of his work:

Everybody has a blog these days. Jim Lee, an amazing comic book artist who was at the height of popularity in the late 80s & early 90s, and his crew have a blog on blogspot. They post sketches and are doing a Iron Chef thing with artwork. It’s nice to see how Jim Lee’s work has evolved and refined. He’s still doing some pretty amazing artwork and his blog give you an interesting look at him as an artist.

Several of my co-workers have left the company this past month. It’s sad to see them go but very understandable. I’m not too happy with the way the company is going right now. We had a happy hour to send off one of our co-workers. Some funny pictures came out of it.

My current employers are kinda cheap. They had the holiday party after the holidays so they didn’t have to pay the jacked up holiday rates. There were casino games so it wasn’t too boring. I’m not too much of a gambler but I took the Monopoly money that I won and got a $50 gift certificate to REI in the raffle afterwards. The pictures I took didn’t turn out too good so here’s some pics that a co-worker took.

I’m not too good with putting up pictures that I take. Hope to get some up soon.

Found a site called Deviant Art. A community for amateur artists around the world. You can find some really good stuff (and some not so good stuff) if you look hard enough. I set up a site on Deviant Art. Don’t have anything up there yet, but hope to find time to work on some stuff soon. Check the artists in my favorite’s section. I aspire to be as good some day.

Went hiking in Shenadoah with my sisters and their friends. It was cold and cloudy so the view wasn’t as good but it was good to get some fresh air. I just wish I can go on a real vacation soon. Had to skip on a Halloween party because I was funky after the hike, but here are some pics of co-workers at the party: http://www.apanna.com/albums/index.cfm?album_section=malhotras_halloween
